Series: Love Letter

Phần: 2 / 2

In part one, Love Letter was built to do one thing: write love letters. The 11 templates back then all revolved around the same theme - romance. But the more I worked on it, the more I realized what I actually loved wasn't "writing love letters" - it was sitting down and turning hard-to-say things into words, and that isn't something romance has a monopoly on. So Love Letter slowly grew past its own name .

No longer just about two people#

From 11 templates built purely around romance, the project now has 19: friendship, siblings, "comrades," family (in 3-, 4- and 5-person versions), farewell letters, and celebration letters.

Try a few of the new templates below:

Turning it into a web app#

At first, this project was just for me. But as the number of templates kept growing, I started wanting to share it with more people - and the CLI version, handy as it was for a programmer, wasn't exactly something you hand to your family or friends to try. So I built a web app with Astro + TypeScript, deployed at love-letter.tungtt.dev: open the link and start writing right away, nothing to install.

This was the first time I'd built a full web app, and my first time touching Astro too. Lucky for me, AI help exists now (I used Claude), so learning and building at the same time wasn't nearly as rough as it used to be - the whole thing came together in under a week. Building a product while picking up a new piece of tech on the side felt worth it.

If you can, try the app on desktop to get the full experience of what I built.

The CLI is still around for anyone who wants to dig deeper, along with a new script - generate_all.py - that renders the same content against all 19 templates at once, handy for comparing which one fits best.

Closing thoughts#

I honestly didn't expect a small spark of inspiration to grow into an app like this, and I'm really happy to share it with everyone.

If you try it and run into a bug, or have an idea for a new letter theme, leave a comment - I'll keep building on it.
